Senior Night!

5 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Senior Night (Plus 21 FREE Sports Banners!)

Senior Night ideas, free editable Canva banners, affordable Walgreens printing tips, DIY oversized heads, table decorations, outfit inspiration, and everything you need to make your athlete's big night special!

I have a confession. I thought I was prepared for Senior Night.

And then it happened.

Somewhere between figuring out what to wear, making sure we were where we needed to be, and trying not to cry thinking about how quickly the years had gone by, I realized there were a few things I really wish someone had told me ahead of time.

Not because everything needs to be Pinterest-perfect. It absolutely doesn't.

But because these are the moments you don't get back.

One minute you're watching your little one run around a field in a uniform that's three sizes too big, and the next you're standing beside them on Senior Night wondering how in the world you got here.

I've already experienced Senior Night as a mom, and looking back, there are things I wish I'd known, pictures I wish I'd taken, and little details I would've prepared differently.

So I decided to put EVERYTHING in one place for you!

We're talking free Senior Night banners for nearly every sport, how to print them without spending a fortune, DIY oversized heads, table decorations, mom outfit inspiration, and all the little things that make this night special.

And the best part? Almost everything you make can be saved and used again at their graduation party!

Let's get into it.

1. Make a Personalized Senior Night Banner (Without Spending a Fortune!)

You know those adorable Senior Night banners that look like someone spent hours hand-painting them on brown craft paper?

The big lettering, school colors, sports graphics, and cute little details?

I LOVE them.

But I don't necessarily have the time or artistic ability to hand-paint one myself.

So I created 21 FREE editable Senior Night banner templates that give you that exact handmade look without ever picking up a paintbrush!

And I've got a money-saving trick for printing them, too.

How to Make Your Own Senior Night Banner

It's honestly so much easier than you might think!

Step 1: Pick your sport.

Scroll down to find your sport and click the free Canva template.

Step 2: Personalize your banner.

Once you're in Canva, customize the athlete's name, wording, and any editable colors or design elements.

Some of the hand-painted artwork may remain as image elements, so check which details are editable before ordering.

Step 3: Download your banner.

Once everything looks the way you want, download it as a high-quality PNG.

Make sure your design is the correct size for the poster you plan to order.

Step 4: Print it at Walgreens!

Here's my favorite money-saving tip.

I've found Walgreens to be one of the cheapest places to print these banners, especially when you can stack your order with one of their photo promotions.

Upload your finished design to Walgreens Photo, select your poster size, and double-check the preview to make sure nothing important gets cut off.

Depending on the size and availability at your location, you may even be able to pick it up locally.

Step 5: NEVER order without checking for a coupon code!

Seriously. This is where the savings happen.

Walgreens runs photo promotions regularly, and I always check for a coupon before ordering anything.

What Size Should You Print Your Senior Night Banner?

That really depends on how you're planning to display it!

If you're placing it on a table, you might want something smaller.

If you're hanging it on a gym wall, fence, or using it for pictures, you'll probably want something much larger.

My advice: Decide where you're going to hang your banner BEFORE ordering.

Check the dimensions of your Canva design and choose a matching print size. If you change the aspect ratio, some artwork may get cropped or need to be repositioned.

And don't forget to check with your school about where banners can be displayed.

One more thing: SAVE YOUR BANNER!

You'll definitely want to use it again at graduation.

2. Make a Giant Senior Night Head (AKA a Fathead!)

Okay, this might be one of my favorite Senior Night decorations because they're SO fun.

You've probably seen those giant cutouts of athletes' faces being held up in the student section or during Senior Night pictures.

They make everybody laugh, they're adorable in pictures, and they're surprisingly easy to make yourself.

You definitely don't need to spend a fortune having one custom-made.

How to Make Your Own Oversized Senior Head

Here's what you'll need:

  • A clear picture of your athlete

  • Canva or another photo-editing tool

  • A large printed picture

  • Foam board or sturdy poster board

  • Scissors or a craft knife

  • Adhesive, if needed

  • Optional wooden paint stirrer for a handle

Step 1: Choose a great picture.

You want a picture where their face is clear and looking toward the camera.

Bonus points if it's a funny picture!

Step 2: Remove the background.

Upload the picture into Canva and use a background-removal tool to isolate the face.

You want just their head, without the distracting background.

Step 3: Make it BIG!

I love these somewhere around 18–24 inches tall, but you can go larger if you want.

The bigger the head, the funnier the pictures!

Step 4: Print and cut it out.

Have your picture printed at a photo or print shop, attach it to foam board if necessary, and carefully cut around the face.

You can even attach a wooden handle to the back to make it easier to hold.

A Few Fun Ways to Use Your Senior Heads

Have your whole family hold them during the ceremony, put them at the Senior Night table, or take a picture of your athlete standing beside their giant face.

And here's an idea I absolutely love:

Make two!

One using a current picture and one using their very first sports picture.

Imagine holding up that tiny kindergarten face beside your high school senior.

I'm already emotional thinking about it.

And yes, these are PERFECT to save for the graduation party, too.

3. Find Out if Your School Does a Senior Night Table or Display

This is a big one!

Some schools have families decorate tables for each senior, and others have everyone create posters, banners, locker decorations, or fence displays.

It completely depends on the school and the sport.

Before Senior Night, ask your coach or team parent what families typically do.

I wish I'd known more about all of these little traditions ahead of time because they can be so special.

What to Put on a Senior Night Table

If your school does a table display, here are some fun ideas.

1. Pictures from Their First Season to Their Senior Season

This is probably my favorite.

Find pictures of your athlete from the first time they played their sport all the way through senior year.

Those little uniforms and oversized shoes are going to get you.

2. Their Old Jerseys

If you saved jerseys from when they were little, now's the time to pull them out.

You can hang them behind the table or lay them out beside their current jersey.

3. Trophies, Medals, and Awards

Finally, a reason to get all those trophies out of the closet!

Display their medals, awards, championship pictures, and anything meaningful they've collected through the years.

4. Their Letterman Jacket

If your senior has a letterman jacket, drape it over a chair or hang it behind the table.

5. Flowers or Balloons in School Colors

You don't have to go crazy here.

A few flowers, a balloon arrangement, or some simple decorations can make the table look adorable.

6. A Framed Senior Picture

Use a recent sports portrait or senior photo as the centerpiece.

7. A Giant Senior Head

Those Fatheads we talked about? Perfect for this!

8. Their Favorite Snacks

Make a little basket with their favorite candy, drinks, or snacks.

9. A Memory Jar

Set out little pieces of paper and ask teammates, friends, and family members to write down their favorite memories with your senior.

Imagine them reading those years later.

Senior Night Table Theme Ideas

If you want your display to feel coordinated, try one of these themes.

Through the Years: Arrange pictures in chronological order, starting with their first season and ending with senior year.

School Spirit: Go all out in team colors with their jersey number, sports equipment, and banners.

Simple and Classic: Use neutral frames, a few flowers, and a beautiful senior portrait.

Memory Lane: Fill the table with old jerseys, awards, childhood pictures, and meaningful keepsakes.

What if Your School Doesn't Do Tables?

You can still use these ideas!

Decorate their locker, put together a poster board, surprise them with a display at home, or save everything for their graduation party.

The goal isn't to have the fanciest table.

It's to celebrate all the years that got them here.

4. Make a Senior Night Photo Checklist BEFORE You Go!

Okay, this is something I really wish someone had told me.

Senior Night goes by SO FAST.

One minute you're arriving, and the next they're calling your child's name, you're walking across the field, someone is trying to get your attention, and you're wondering if anybody actually took a picture.

So don't leave this to chance.

Make a list of the pictures you want ahead of time!

12 Senior Night Pictures You Don't Want to Miss

  1. Your senior alone in their uniform

  2. Your athlete with Mom and Dad

  3. Your senior with their siblings

  4. The entire family on the field or court

  5. Your senior with their coaches

  6. Your athlete with their teammates

  7. A close-up of their jersey number

  8. Your family holding their Senior Night banner

  9. Pictures with the giant Fatheads

  10. Their Senior Night table or display

  11. A candid moment during the ceremony

  12. One last picture after the game

My Favorite Senior Night Picture Idea

Recreate their very first sports picture!

Find that adorable picture from when your child first started playing.

Maybe they're wearing a soccer uniform that's way too big.

Maybe it's their first baseball picture with their little hat falling over their eyes.

Maybe they're standing beside a basketball that's almost as big as they are.

Then try to recreate that exact pose with them as a senior.

Put the two pictures side by side.

First Game → Senior Night

I cannot think of a sweeter way to show how quickly time has passed.

Don't Forget to Get a Video!

If you're walking your senior onto the field or court, ask someone else to record it.

You deserve to actually experience the moment instead of watching it through your phone.

Ask a friend, grandparent, or another parent to film the ceremony.

And if your school reads a little biography about your athlete, you'll definitely want to save that video.

5. Plan Your Senior Night Outfit (Yes, Mom, You're Going to Be in the Pictures!)

Okay, let's talk about something we always seem to leave until the very last minute.

WHAT ARE WE WEARING?

I know Senior Night is about our kids.

But you're going to be in the pictures, too!

And you'll probably be looking at these photos for the rest of your life.

So give yourself a little time to plan something that makes you feel cute and comfortable.

I love starting with the school's colors and finding a way to make them feel like my personal style.

You don't necessarily have to wear a team T-shirt if that's not your thing.

Five Senior Night Outfit Ideas for Moms

1. Cute and Casual

A fitted top in your school's color, great-fitting jeans, comfortable sneakers, and fun earrings.

This is perfect for outdoor sports like football, soccer, and baseball.

2. Elevated Game Day

Wide-leg jeans or trousers, a fitted top, a cute jacket, and statement jewelry.

You'll look put together without feeling overdressed.

3. Sporty Mom

A matching athletic set, a varsity-inspired jacket, stylish sneakers, and a fun bag.

Comfortable, cute, and easy to wear again.

4. A Dress in Your School Colors

A cute dress with boots or comfortable flats can be perfect for indoor Senior Nights or schools where families dress up a little more.

5. Neutrals With School-Color Accessories

If you don't love your school's colors, wear black, white, or denim and incorporate the colors with a handbag, earrings, scarf, or shoes.

You can show school spirit without wearing head-to-toe team colors.

My Biggest Senior Night Outfit Tip

Make sure you're comfortable walking on the field, court, or wherever the ceremony is happening.

Nobody wants to be sinking into the football field in heels!

And check the weather if your ceremony is outside.

BONUS: Five Little Things to Do Before Senior Night

These are the things that don't always make the Pinterest boards, but they really matter.

1. Find Out Exactly How the Ceremony Works

Ask the coach or athletic department:

  • What time should families arrive?

  • Where do parents line up?

  • Who walks with the senior?

  • When will pictures be taken?

  • Are families responsible for decorations?

  • Is there a specific place to hang banners?

Every school is different, so knowing the plan ahead of time makes everything less stressful.

2. Make Sure Someone Is Taking Pictures

Designate a friend or family member who can take photos while you're participating in the ceremony.

You'll be thankful later.

3. Get Your Decorations Ready Early

Don't wait until the night before to order your banner, print your oversized heads, or pull out old pictures.

Give yourself extra time in case something needs to be reprinted.

4. Write Your Senior a Letter

This might end up being more special than any decoration you make.

Tell them how proud you are.

Remind them of the little kid who first started playing their sport.

Talk about the things you've loved watching them learn, the challenges they've overcome, and the person they've become.

Not just as an athlete, but as a human.

You don't have to give it to them in front of everybody.

Leave it on their pillow that night or tuck it into their bag.

5. Bring Tissues!

I don't care how tough you think you are.

Just bring them.

BONUS TIP: Save EVERYTHING for Their Graduation Party!

Please, please, please don't throw away all your Senior Night decorations!

This is something I wish every senior parent knew.

You can reuse almost everything again at graduation.

Think about it.

You already have the banner, oversized heads, framed photos, trophies, jerseys, and school-color decorations.

Those are PERFECT for creating a graduation-party display!

Senior Night Decorations You Can Reuse for Graduation

  • Your personalized sports banner

  • Giant senior heads

  • Childhood sports pictures

  • Framed senior portraits

  • Trophies and medals

  • Old jerseys and uniforms

  • Letterman jackets

  • Sports equipment

  • School-color decorations

And then…You can create an entire sports-themed table for their graduation party display using things you've already made. And honestly, with all the work it takes, I love that these decorations get to be part of more than one special day.

One Last Thing, Mama...

If you're heading into Senior Night and feeling emotional, excited, overwhelmed, or completely unprepared, I get it.

There's something about watching your child finish a chapter that makes you wish you could go back and experience the beginning all over again….

The tiny uniforms, the early morning games, the snack bags, the practices you thought would never end, the car rides where you talked about everything and nothing….

And then somehow, they're seniors.

So make the banner. Take the pictures. Write the letter. Cheer a little louder.

But don't get so caught up trying to make everything special that you forget to actually enjoy it. Because one day you'll realize those ordinary nights sitting on the sidelines were never ordinary at all.

They were the big moments. Find the magic in the mundane.
